In 2021, MEIRS obtained accreditation from the Department of Justice, empowering the organization to provide immigration-related legal services to asylum seekers. With an in-house accredited representative, MEIRS is capable of filing asylum claims and representing individuals in immigration court. MEIRS recognizes the financial constraints faced by asylum seekers and offers its services on a sliding scale. For the majority of the individuals they represent, they do so free of charge. It is worth noting that MEIRS is one of only two nonprofits in Maine with this prestigious accreditation.
